Are cancelled stays using reward points re-posted back to account?

I booked a room using points in September 2014 and I can see the transaction listed as "1 night, category 2 hotel" and a deduction of 10,000 points.  I cancelled the room in January 2015 well before the actual date and I can see it again listed as cancelled, however, for points earned it shows zero.   Since then, I have not seen the 10,000 points re-instated and I thought they were supposed to be?   I know Ive cancelled stays using points previously, with the points reinstated... or am I missing something here?
