Marriott recently changed their categories for many of their properties. My wife and I have stayed at the Renaissance ClubSport in Walnut Creek, CA since it opened. Earlier this year Marriott decided to change its category from 4 to 5. We had earned a free night prior to the change but are now unable to use the free night as it is only for category 4. In the past and for a change we occasionally stayed at the Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa but price wise we always returned to the Renaissance. This week went I sent to book another stay at the Renaissance I found their rates had increased to the same rates as the Lafayette Park Hotel. Given the choice of hotels at the same price we decided to book the Lafayette Park Hotel this trip and may well move our 12/14 nights a year stays at the Renaissance to the Lafayette Park Hotel. Sorry Marriott!!
