InsideFlyer's last page of the new issue has an article about Hotel Value for Frequent Guests.  The last line of the first paragraph states that "annual hotel awards category reassignments from Marriott, SPG, Carlson and Hilton may bring more sticker shock in 2013."  Ya think?

I see on Flyer Talk that lots of people have used points to stay here in the past, but now, I tried to make a reservation there, but it says there is not availability over the next year.  Can anyone show me where this hotel, and what others don't particiapte in getting or using points?

Definition of Stay (Mega Bonus)

Can someone enlighten me what constitute a stay in the megabonus 2013? A quote form the megabonus 2013 webpage state "A stay is defined as consecutive nights spend at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity."

Does a one night stay in a participating hotels constitute a stay or it must be two consecutive nights?

If two consecutive nights constitute a stay, then if staying for four nights means you paid two stays and thereby entitled to a free e-cert night?

Thanks

Has the year reset yet?

I've seen this discussed, but I'm a bit confused.  I received an e-mail that I could buy back to my gold status for 20K points until April 1, 2013.  I also see that option when I login to my account.  However, my account still shows gold as of Feb 6.

I've read that the year resets in Mid-January and I'm curious if it's reset for 2013 as of February 6th.  My daughter begins college in August and will be attending on a soccer scholarship.  I expect to make most of the games and the school's are far enough way that I'll need to stay two nights just about each weekend during the season (about 10 weeks), and will always stay at a Marriott.  I'd prefer to use those 20K points for free nights instead of buying back to gold, but will buy back if the year hasn't reset yet.

Thanks in advance.

Five dollar a gallon gas and new hotel rewards categories

Here in LA (southern CA) and environs, the average price of gasoline is nearing 5 bucks a gallon. At COSTCO it's still $4.07 and the line looks like a per-hurricane rush at a southern seaport.  So the public should be off the roads, storming the Hybrid car salerooms, getting in line for a bus ride, breaking out the bikes, etc.  Nah, business and traffic as usual!  Huge land yachts cruising the always congested freeways, parking lots at malls filled to the brim, life is unaffected.

So what if there are going to be nine categories of hotels?  With gas at this price and no one seeming to care, the chances that most of us will not be using points seem very remote.

Platinum Premier "undocumented" features

So I thought it was just as important to express my pleasure with Marriott as I do my displeasure on this site.  In the last week I've been pleasantly surprised by a couple hotels that have gone above and beyond for me as a Platinum Premier.

This past weekend I spent the night in Chicago (Courtyard Magnificient Mile) using a free night certificate from my Marriott Visa.  Upon check in I was informed I was upgraded...wait, that's not even the surprise...additionally I was given a two coupons for 50% off in the restaurant for two people.  Not that I'd necessarily consider eating at the hotel restaurant in a city like Chicago...but 50% off (any meal or room service) is a pretty nice perk.

I just checked in last night to the Renaissance Eden Roc in Miami.  I was given the Platinum welcome gift option when I arrived.  The sheet included the standard food or 500 points...but also included free internet for my entire stay.  As I went to choose that option, the guy at the desk told me that he was giving me that just for being a Premier and to choose something else.

Did someone tell the hotels that they need to recognize Premier above and beyond Platinum or what?  Needless to say...I'm feeling the love, and basking in it...lol.

Marriott asking for Freddie vote

$

It's time where Marriott and the other lodging chains send out reminders for their supposedly loyal customers to vote for their programs to receive the Freddie Award, an award for top travel-related programs.

My question to Marriott: "Really? After what you just pulled you expect me to vote for you?"

Platinum Elite for Life -

So I just found out about the Platinum Elite for life program.

Qualifications are:

Emeritus Platinum status is offered after the following qualifications are met:

Guest has been a member of Marriott Rewards program for 12 years, with at least one year at Platinum Elite.
Guest has stayed 1,000 nights over the history of the Marriott Rewards account.
2,000,000 total points earned during the history of the account.

So I find myself having all of this EXCEPT the 12 years of membership (I'm only at 10 1/2).  What I don't understand is why this is even a requirement.  I've done all the hard stuff to prove my loyalty and could literally stop staying in Marriotts and get my lifetime Platinum status (which is awesome thank you).  It sure would be better if I could get it now.  I've dropped to Gold(after 9 straight years of Platinum and Platinum Elite) due to coming off the road for the birth of my child.  I'll likely make Platinum before the end of this year (only missed it by a couple of days last year) which will carry me through to my lifetime status but if I miss it again by a few nights I'll be uber dissappointed.

Can someone explain to me the thinking of the 12 year requirement?

Pay for 2 get 1 Free

I received a brochure with my new Marriott Rewards Card that advertised after my 2nd night was paid, I would get 1 night for Free on my next stay.

I can't find this anywhere on the computer.

Anyone use this yet?

How do I use this?

Why do Silvers get better Mega Bonus Deals than Platinum?

My wife is a Silver....I'm Platinum.  She regularly gets mega bonus offers "stay 2 nights...get 1 night free after 2nd paid stay."  Platinums, on the other hand, have to stay 15 nights to get 25,000 points and and addition 5 nights to get up to 20 nights to earn 40,000 points.  Is it possible for Platinums to be able to take advantage of the Silver mega bonus offers?

Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 2013 - trying again as Platinum

Giving the Cosmo a second chance, this time (finally!) as Platinum. Documenting my experiences here. Hoping that it won't turn out a disaster like last time.

Part 1: _The "Booking on Marriott.com" Experience_

Booking indicated a resort fee but did not specify what it included. Google answered with --

It looks like they had a recent policy change on Jan 1 2013 - as they are now charging a resort fee. This is surprising, since the Cosmo is a luxury hotel that's not supposed to be tacky and penny-pinching like the cheaper hotels on the strip. There's also this quote from LV Sun, which makes me worried that maybe the Cosmo is losing its vision (or, did they lose their CEO?):

“I’ve been playing around in that (resort fee) arena for 15 years,” veteran hotelier and Cosmopolitan CEO John Unwin said in a recent interview. Though hotels often tack on resort fees to offset plummeting hotel rates, “we’re not doing that because people don’t like it,” Unwin said.

Apparently, this resort fee is waived for Identity Platinum, but not for Marriott Platinum. The resort fee comes with gym access, phone and Internet. This basically means that Marriott Gold and Platinum members have to pay a fee for using the Internet at this Autograph Collection hotel.

E195 Checks

I am a PP member who stays 200+ nights every year in a Marriott.  I choose to use Marriott because of the E195 ($1000 Marriott Checks for 135000 points). these are no longer offered.  I use those checks to meet my family for vacations.  I will now be shopping for a better deal at another company.  It is STUPID to endanger loyalty, but you have.  There are companies out there that will treasure my 200+ nights per year and treat me better.

American Airlines and Reward Redemption

During a recent webcast a question was asked about the potential for American Airlines returning to the Marriott Rewards program.  The response was that there is a lot of support from members regarding AA and that the program was revised/updated every two years.  I do not think I was alone in believing that there was a strong posibility of seeing AA reinstated.  Has anyone else heard any updates or possibly had heard this webcast from a couple of months ago?  If you heard the webcast did you get the same impression that I did?

Platinum Premier - An Insulting Status, If Ever There Was One.

Hi, all.  For those that do not know, there is a level called Platinum Premier that is supposed to be above the "Platinum" level.   The status used to mean something, as I found out, when I first attained it in 2005.   I find the status, this time around, to be an insult.

  1. The "status" is meant to recognize the top 3% of those in the Marriott Rewards program;  it used to recognize the top 3% of those with Platinum status;
  2. The status gets you NOTHING over the regular "Platinum" status.
  3. It used to be that  your Platinum Premier card entitled you to a 10-15% discount in any restaurant in the hotel in which you were staying( it was indicated on the back of the card);
  4. You would get both arrival gifts (points AND a pantry item and some water);
  5. The General Manager would make it a point to meet you, personally;
  6. The staff would actually recognize you as a "Platinum Premier" not just "Platinum".

I just got off the phone with Marriott Rewards and the representative on the other end of the line told me that Platinum Premier gets you nothing over Platinum.  It is just a way to recognize the top 3% and that some members like to have the card and "puff out their chest" about the status.

Well, I am not one of those people. If I have "earned" a status, then that status should come with some benefit, otherwise it is an insult.  Telling someone that you want to "recognize" their status without any real reward showing that recognition is empty and disingenuous.   Why have a "status level" above another one, if the benefits are EXACTLY the same as the "lower" level?

I am curious to hear what other Platinum Premier members think about this and really interested to hear what an official Marriott rep has to say.

Marriott Benefits Extended 2???

Do Marriott benefits such as Internet or lounge access extended to other brand such as Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, NV?  Thanks!

Game over, man!

I'm giving Hilton an honest opportunity to reclaim a large percentage of my business. I was just comp'ed Gold with the usual 90 day, 21-stay challenge for Diamond which will be no real challenge at all. As Lifetime Platinum is secured and renewal of Platinum on its own is already covered (although PP is obviously at risk, but who'd notice?), I can focus on what Hilton offers me at the functionally equivalent level.

I was granted Gold mid-stay in Charlotte, my profile and the front desk were brought up to date overnight (and I was offered a move to an Executive floor room, which I declined), so next week at the HGI in Scottsdale will be the first real "test".

I'm not giving up on Marriott, just taking an opportunity to evaluate the relative merits side-to-side, or Diamond to Platinum, if you prefer. One thing that will be part of the new reality is that there will be no Courtyards for the remainder of this year at the very least, unless that is the only Marriott property with no Hiltons in reasonable distance. Some trips will include both, others will be exclusively one or the other; all brands (other than the now-accursed CY) will be used to gauge who gets the majority—or all—of my business beginning in 2014.

I can now understand the hold on travelers that loyalty programs have; moving even the smallest part of your business is a substantial decision on our part, and they're counting on that, knowing that we will endure the known substandard product out of comfort and familiarity rather than risk upset learning a new way, a new look, and new program rules. I'm done playing the fool for someone else's marketing department, no longer the presumptive 125+ room night cha-ching in the annual revenue goals. You now have to compete (again) for my dollar, my word-of-mouth recommendation, and my loyalty. The days of taking me for granted as a lifelong, diehard customer are most assuredly over. Fool me once, and all that.

Now if I can just find the Hilton Insiders forum...
