Rewards Members - we cannot stop the drumbeat to management now!

$

Here is what we, as loyal Marriott Members have lost in the last 2 -3 years

Devaluation of our points

Loss of elite $1,000 gift checks

No breakfast on weekends in USA/CDA

Lack of recogniton of Silver/Gold/Palt/PP/LP status at most full service and other Marriott's

Upgrades - not happening

BOGO's - BoGONE

Courtyards - no more free coffee in lobby, awful microwaved Breakfast at exhorbitant prices

Loss of AA as a partner for travel packages

Making changes based on customer input (really? where do you find these customers - they must be the same dead people who vote in Chicago elections, where the slogan is vote early and often - and no offense to Chicagoan's, I lived there and love the city, just not its corrupt political machine)

And the list goes on. Others, please add as you see fit.

My only point, to Michelle, community manager and others is this is not unnoticed, we are growing resentful. What do we have in return:

Rollover nights

4th night free on redemptions

clarity on lifetime status, which most properties dont care about, dont recognize and its become a big "so what"

free internet for gold/plat - its the slowest conx, so its really not worth much

Seems like, in my accountant view, the losses outnumber the gains. The scale is now tilted away from your most loyal, caring members, who spend big, and often.

It seems like no suggestion made on this board ever gets adopted, and while we may be impatient, we do watch and wait. Marriott management should start to worry, because that leaking sound being hear is your most loyal members straying, going to Hilton, Starwood, Hyatt and others.

I strongly suggest a true "voice of the customer" survey, ask us what we want, what we would pay for, what perks are important to us, BY BRAND. Show us the results. Make sure you get the people who post here, we are the voice of those who dont post, and those who just lurk.

We know you and the properties need to make a profit. We ask that you really think long and hard about what you have done, and where can you give back what you took away, things that were popular, that we all enjoyed, that made your program WHAT IT WAS and COULD BE, BUT ISN"T RIGHT NOW.

Other insiders, add your commets, your voice, your views. Dissent is only effective if its fresh continuous and widespread (ask the Occupy Wall Street Crowd). We have the power of the purse, and we can exercise it. We have a choice in hotels, and we will start to make it. Marritt, you cannot say you havent been warned.

Dollars for status

Just got an email from the Wyndam loyatly program about their gold status program.  Sadly it contains an idea that might take hold in other programs: paying more on average per night gets more!

Here's the details:

  • The amount of Gold Status Points you have depends on the average amount you spent over the course of your 20 qualified nights.

Average spend per 20 nightsGold Status Points earned
$100 or less6,000
$100.01 - $15010,000

Marriott Premier Visa now receiving Ritz points?

$

We just applied for the Marriott Premier Visa with hopes of receiving RC points (where we will be getting married) and after reading many previous posts we feared we wouldn't receive the 5x per $1 spent unless we had the actual RC Visa.

We haven't activated the MR card yet and called Chase to determine if this was the case. The representative - who was extremely helpful - said that as of March 6, 2013, all RC were included in the 5x per $1 spent. Only RC Destination Clubs still receive the 1x per $1 spent.

Of course we're going to call Chase tomorrow to see if we receive a different answer, but wanted to ask -- has anyone else heard this or received a similar response?

This is rather disconcerting after leaving stuff out in plain sight when leaving the room.

Apparently there is some new electronic gadget that was reported on by the Today show not too long ago about how to open our door locks without a key.  And how to make the device is on, of course, YouTube.

Here's a link to the Today episode.  It's followed by another episode talking about hotel chains and their points.

I found a number of videos on YouTube with a search "Hotel Door Hack"

Wow, this "insiders" website is terrible, convoluted, hard to navigate, impossible to find a place to add a comment and frustrating, not to mention completely lacking intuitive design.  If you can't find "post a new topic" of your choice in 5 minutes of searching there's something wrong with the blog site.  I finally settled for this category that's not remotely related to my post just because there's no other place I could get into to post it.

But....  that's just me.

IT is normally the first step, then...

Marriott Reward Credit Card - Ritz Carlton

I have recently received the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase.  They state that you earn 5 points for every $1 spend at "participating" Marriott locations worldwide.

My question is, are Ritz-Carlton hotels participating in this program?  If I use this credit card at RC hotels, will I earn the 5 points per $1 spent?

I know I can redeem my points at RC hotels, but I am not sure if I earn points through this credit card.  Any thoughts here would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Definition of Stay (Mega Bonus)

Can someone enlighten me what constitute a stay in the megabonus 2013? A quote form the megabonus 2013 webpage state "A stay is defined as consecutive nights spend at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity."

Does a one night stay in a participating hotels constitute a stay or it must be two consecutive nights?

If two consecutive nights constitute a stay, then if staying for four nights means you paid two stays and thereby entitled to a free e-cert night?

Thanks

Suppose I stay 2 consecutive nights at the same hotel, pay for one night, and use points or a certificate for the other night. Will I get credit for a stay towards my Mega Bonus?

In the Terms and Conditions it says: "Nights spent while redeeming an award are not eligible for credit."

E195 Checks

I am a PP member who stays 200+ nights every year in a Marriott.  I choose to use Marriott because of the E195 ($1000 Marriott Checks for 135000 points). these are no longer offered.  I use those checks to meet my family for vacations.  I will now be shopping for a better deal at another company.  It is STUPID to endanger loyalty, but you have.  There are companies out there that will treasure my 200+ nights per year and treat me better.

Courtyard Room Upgrades for Platinums?

$

I'm really confused about the policy, which essentially says they'll upgrade your room but there are no guarantees and absolutely no recourse if a property, rightly or not, decides to not honor this perk.

My experience at both Courtyards in Little Rock, AR after over four months of weekly stays is that there is no such thing as an upgraded room at a Courtyard.  They may try to claim a room by the elevator (and ice machine that grinds loudly at 2am) is an upgrade, or that honoring my profile request for a high floor constitutes an upgrade, but really?

I know one of the Little Rock Courtyards is operated by McKibbon group, and the other appears to be corporate owned. Yet no difference in the indifference of FDCs when asked about upgraded rooms.  And I'm not going to even get into the indifference in general of staff at both those properties.  (That review will wait for after I'm done with my last stay there.)

Platinum Late Check Out Benefit - Any recent experiences???

Just asked for a late check-out today, and all they would give me was an extra hour???

Normal check-out was 11am, and the latest they would give me was noon?

Asked them if they were sure if that was all they could spare for a platinum member and they said yes!

Even in NYC on a busy day, I can usually get a 1 or 2pm checkout.

USA Today article on Hotel Loyalty Programs

Stinging article today in the paper.  Article suggests that  Marriott, Starwood, and Hilton are ALL making it difficult to stay loyal.  Major de-valuations at each place.  Seems Hilton was by far the worst.  good read, bad results.  we shoul;d all use our points ASAP, it is only going to get worse.

Happy travels.

Marriott vs Hilton Point Value - Part 3

$

Many MRI members have alluded to point value comparisons between Marriott and Hilton. So, now the question is how quickly are points earned in both programs? Part 1 is found here for gift cards and merchandise: Marriott vs Hilton Point Valueand Part 2 is found here for hotel rooms in major metropolitan areas:Marriott vs Hilton Point Value - Part 2

Now that we know how we spend points, let's look at how we earn points and compare.

The analysis below are for stays I made in September 2011 at a Hilton Garden Inn and a Marriott Springhill Suites, both in Columbus, OH and about 2 miles apart (both near my current client). Ironically, both have the same exact negotiated rates and state/city taxes making the comparison all the easier. Lastly, it should be noted that I have top-tier status in each program and also their "premier" credit cards and am signed up for Hilton's "Double Dip" bonus program and Marriott's Megabonus promotion. One assumption - I will make the number of required Marriott nights to earn the full Megabonus of 50,000 points.

Key findings: the Megabonus makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE in points earnings, nearly doubling the "normal points" earned when the promotion is not underway and not already achieved. Normal earning power of points is 35.54 points per dollar for Hilton and 18.30 points per dollar for Marriott yielding a ratio of 1.89 as many Hilton points per dollar spend versus Marriott points per dollar spent, whereas it is 34.54 and 36.53 respectively during Megabonus promotions or 0.95 ratio.

Finally, I added two additional columns to see how Megabonus works out on an annual basis using the assumption that 50 nights are needed to earn 100,000 Megabonus points (two promos per year) yielding a Marriott PP$ of 22.68 or a ratio of 1.52 H:M.

Canadian Premier (Black) Card

As a Canadian I recently received my new Chase Premier Card but I now find out that Canadians do not get the 50K miles at sign-up - we get 30K. Why are we not getting the same as the US Premier Card holders? Further  I just found out from Marriott Rewards that we also do not get the one night credit for every $3K spend.  I find this very concerning that all North American card holders are not treated equally.  I am currently a platinum elite member but will be struggling to retain it next year and was hoping to gain the extra credit for each $3K spent.

Platinum Premier - why?

$

Welcome to 2013.  Another year of week in and out stays in a hotel room.  Another year of being a MR Platinum Premier member.

As I reflect on my status, only given to the top 3% of Platinum members, I ask myself why.  Why would Marriott send me a bathroom tote as a gift?  Surely someone at Marriott must realize that I already have the travel accessories category figured out, given that I stayed over 160 nights at their hotel chain last year.  I appreciate the sentiment of a gift, but the gift itself doesn't seem to fit.  I suppose it might make more sense than a solar-powered USB charger.  Gosh, was that two years ago?  Oh yeah, last year there was an online subscription to the WSJ.

Why am I writing all this?  Am I just another ungrateful traveler and rewards snob?  Maybe I am, but maybe there's a point to this rant.

Marriott needs to put something, anything in writing that guarantees Platinum Premier members something more than everyone else.  Sure, PP gets folks to the front of the line for upgrades (if they're available), but where is the REAL bonus?  Why not offer some innovative features like what Starwood's tiered SPG program created?  Platinum level is 50 nights, but you keep earning more GUARANTEED benefits by achieving 75 nights and 100 nights.

Dare I say it, why even have a PP tier when members who achieve that level of status may or may not actually benefit?  Hilton Honors doesn't have any problem only offering 3 tiers and still has loyalty a plenty.  When Delta implemented Diamond status three years ago, they also rewarded members with some tangible benefits (arguably diminished over time, but we're not talking about bathroom totes made in China).

C'mon Marriott Rewards.  Reward me as a Platinum Premier.  Quit toying with my fierce loyalty.  This year I only plan to stay the minimum nights required to hit all the promotions (what's that, 75 nights?).  Wouldn't you rather entice me to keep staying 160 a year?  Maybe not.

Sincerely,

Steve
